FE290 Crankcase pressure...uh-oh
Changed the oil for the 1st time on my new Carryall 1 and started to notice small puddles of oil on the floor. Thought it was the plug or filter but I was wrong. Best I can tell it's coming from the case seam just above the dipstick tube right near the base of the cylinder. It is being pushed out the case mating surface I think.
So I get to thinking, that's a strange place for oil to leak. Especially since it's above the oil level. I wondered if maybe the crankcase was becoming pressurized. I pulled the dipstick while it was idling and took a nice shower of hot oil...awesome! The air pressure/fluctuations/turbulence seemed excessive to me. So this smacks of ring blowby right? I assumed that the hose going from the valve cover to the carb was some type of crankcase ventilation. I pulled that tube and the pressure fluctuations from the valve head were similar to what I experienced when pulling the dipstick. It's weird though because the engine runs good a 1/2 to WOT. Stumbles badly off-idle though. Am I overlooking something simple or is this a strong sign of cylinder/ring wear? This engine has 1110 hours on it. Thanks in advance! |

Valve adjustment? Can a slightly open valve cause this type of crankcase pressure...1100 hourse is not very many!

Re: FE290 Crankcase pressure...uh-oh
Actually this is a very common problem with these engines. I have repaired many of them and nothing wrong with your engine.
These engines will have a slight pressure and vacuum cycle that occurs in the crankcase when running that is normal. That's what also pulses the fuel pump. The leak above oil level is from the oil splash while running. When you get it apart you might even notice that the gasket is drawn inward, not "blown" out. Here's the fix: Go buy a side cover gasket, maybe even the crank seal. Drain your oil then jack your cart up on the clutch side of your engine, this will help hold the cam in. Pull the clutch, Use emory cloth to clean the crankshaft in front of the seal area, this helps with sliding the cover off. Unbolt the side cover and gently wiggle, tap and slide the side cover off slowly being careful not to pull cam out with it. Clean both surfaces , install new gasket and reassemble. |

Thanks for the post Crash. I'll order the parts and give it a go. I'll do a compression test too as suggested by Nubs.
