Lithium is safe when used within its limits. In this case the cells were allowed to become over discharged which then caused a fire during the charging process. They were also
NMC type calls. LiFePO4 are much safer even when abused.

Cheers
Pat.

What Pat911 said. I run Lithium (details in my sig) and have had zero issues. Pay attention to what the smarter folks on here say if you choose to go this route (I am not in the smarter group and relied heavily on these folks to keep me safe) and you will be fine!

If you but the "Drop In"s that already self contained, you don't need to worry about safety. They already have the safety features built in. If you are going to make your own, need to study up here and consult the experts for guidance.

Which is probably the biggest reason I went with the allied drop ins instead of making my own pack. I didn’t want to hassle with the whole experience of researching cells from a reputable buyer, building a compression rack, programming a BMS, worrying about charging it, etc. drop ins have everything already done and ready, strap them in and go.

Protection is the key, and that’s what the BMS does. In this case the BMS was wired incorrectly and did not disconnect the battery when the cell minimum voltages were reached. I believe the cart owner knew this but tried to resurrect the pack by charging, with catastrophic results.

This pack should have been discarded, or at least individual cells that were below the minimum threshold should have been discarded. The owner would have taken a financial hit, but he would still have his cart.

A lithium call, especially NMC can NEVER be trusted again once it has gone below its absolute minimum voltage, about 2v for LiFePO4 and 2.5v for NMC. Apart from that, anything below 2.5v for LiFePO4 or 3v for NMC will cause permanent damage and reduce its life cycle.

Cheers
Pat.
