Since when is heat shrink frowned upon? If properly applied with a closed end terminal it will keep acid and oxygen from entering around the wiring.

From the knowledge I have acquired from here, there aren't many people who will take the time to apply it properly.

That's why I added "most everyone frowns upon" it

I got a new fuse today and then I took my melted battery to Trojan. They said it can't be repaired because the casing was melted all the way through. So I ended up with a new battery.... I've not hooked anything up yet for two reasons. 1) I'm waiting for my new 4ga cables to arrive! 2) I'm not sure if I need to do anything special on the initial charge or if there is a "break-in period" for new batteries? Keep in mind I have 5 batteries that are 2 years old but in good health and one new battery. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Basically, just keep it charged, don't let it get discharged very far (at least not past 70%) and keep it in the charger. Batteries will not reach full capacity for quite some time.

Never let your battery pack get lower than 50%, check the water, clean the terminals, and make sure the terminals are tight at least once a month.

Do you recommend a specific grease, lubricant, anti corrosive spray on the terminals and all other connections?

CRC makes a cleaner, and a protectant, if they are all clean you can spray the protectant. You only need to worry about the cables hooked to the batteries as this is where the corrosion is.
