Default 1996 Ezgo DCS TXT can't decide which way to go

Bought a 1996 EZGO TXT 36v

put brand new batteries in it.

new cables on batteries only,

tried it head a pop a little smoke from the controller, pressed the pedal some more cart really didn't know what to do, in fwd it would not really move in reverse it would giggle and go fwd then rev then fwd not much in either direction.

replaced the micro switches on the hockey puck style F&R

Still same issue. a little more smoke from the controller, the solenoid clicks like I think it should.

waiting on new brushes for the motor, Currently have it apart and it was nasty inside.

Im sure the control is toast but wanted other ideas. I'm already at a grand into this. I do not want to keep replacing parts until I get it right.

ideas?

I do have another newer cart 2003 TXT PDS, since I really bought the 1996 to resell. Can I put the the controller and motor from my 2003 in it along with the F&R switch and wiring. and upgrade my personal cart? wise?

To convert to stock PDS you will need to swap motors too and that will down grade your PDS.
I would either use a cheap unreliable repaired controller or suck it up and install a 300a XCT and have a much more marketable DCS.

no - sounds like typical Curtis controller failure.
