Default 8 volt battery charging = pop

Maybe this will help someone else

2010 club car,precedent 48 volt,( 6-8 volt)batteries 3 yrs old,pack voltage 45,
Plugged charger in reverse buzzer would come on,put in tow( buzzer would stop)low amps on charger, then something "popped", cleaned all terminals, plugged charger in again, checked each battery while charging, most were about 9 volts, then got to last one and it read 22 volts! Obviously there was a short inside battery, has anyone had this same situation? Replaced with used battery, charger acts normal now, Will charge completely tomorrow while I can supervise.....

Questions.....

Am I correct, this was a short in the battery?
Why did the buzzer go off when I tried to charge(high voltage alarm?)

Not a short but an open if the battery voltage was 22V. A short would make it low not high. Sounds like you have at least one failed battery.

Did you look inside the battery and see the acid was so dark that you couldn't see the top of the plates?

I have seen car batteries fail this way. One cell just fails and opens internally. Battery will then not pass any significant current.

The reason I asked my question was because I was equalizing my batteries this weekend. I touched one of the battery posts and it was so hot I couldn't hold on. I looked at the battery acid and it looked muddy. I think if this would have gone on much longer I would have had an incident like yours.
