It is still happening, but it hasn't effected the performance of the motor. It still does it in speed mode but doesn't do it in torque mode. I guess I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. I sure wish I knew what the cause was but I cant figure it out. I truly believe that there is something possibly mechanical slipping somewhere in the motor or the input pinion on its shaft spinning. I have never heard electrical noise like that.

BUT, when I pulled the gear cover on the bottom of the cart and layed up under it while my wife was driving and recreating the problem I never see anything moving/slipping.

If it ever tears or if I figure it out I will update this thread!!

I might share the wealth with the next motor I buy and try out a Plum Quick. They are what I would consider local folks (I am in Augusta, GA). However, EMP did have good customer service in my opinion and I actually talked to the owner two to three times trying to figure this out.

I still think its controller whine, especially since you say it doesn't do it in Torque mode. If it was mechanical it should do it in either mode.

From a Curtis manual

Quote:
If the controller is tuned such that the system is operating
outside the motor’s safe commutation region, there will be audible
and visual indications. Under normal operation, the motor
will emit a whine with a pitch that increases with increasing
rotation speed
. If a “scratchy” sound is also heard, this is usually
an indication that pin arcing is occurring in the motor and it is
operating outside its safe commutation region. This operation is
normally accompanied by a strong smell from the motor. If the
brushes and commutator bars are visible, arcing may be visible.
The further outside the safe commutation region the motor is
operating, the worse the arcing will be. Operation outside the
safe commutation region is very detrimental to the motor.
The FIELD MIN and possibly also the FIELD RAMP should be increased
until the indications of arcing stop. Decreasing FIELD MAP START
will also help to move operation back into the safe commutation
region.
I've dealt with both company's, talked to Chuck a few times. Both companies are excellent but I NOW lean on PQ if I need anything. Mainly depends on what you want I guess.

It is the controller making the motor windings resonate in that critical situation.
The curtis 1231c did that on purpose by switching to a different frequency at low rpms.
Here is a snippet from an online conversation/argument about it:

"The brief bit of whine when accelerating is NOT a big deal, and it provides significant benefits. Having that short period of low frequency chopping allows the controller to have a smooth takeoff with the commonly used 9" ADC series motor.

Only required evidently, in a poorly designed Curtis 1231C. Funny, DCP Raptors and T Rexes didn't need the squealing frequency to get the job done....and, they were far smoother on take-off than the Curtis! Funny, Auburn Kodiacs and Grizzlies didn't need the squealing frequency to get the job done....and, they were far smoother on take-off than the Curtis!..."

I don't think your controller is supposed to do that but no doubt that is the noise!

Ive heard controller whine on stockers as well as modified carts. It's just the match of parts. If it were mechanical whatever it might have been would have gave up the ghost by now.

Hey buddy,
That sucks that you paid all that money for something that you are not 100% satisfied with (if it is the motor). For me, that noise would NOT be acceptable! I just did some quick searching and it looks like you have a 94 series with some other upgrades???? Also, I see you live in Augusta.

Look, I know how you feel and will put this on the table. I live in Athens and if you want, one weekend you can come up to the house and do some INTENSE trouble shooting! I’m not sure about all your upgrades but we can do some parts swapping to narrow it down. I’m not familiar with the EMP motor but I have a Stock motor and a D&D high torque motor.

One way we can eliminate you axle completely is putting mine on you cart. If the noise still persist, you know for sure that it is not the axle! I will SOON have the LGS 700 amp controller and have the stock Curtis controller that can be swapped around to eliminate the controller. We can switch around any part of mine to yours, or vice versa, to narrow down the problem. If you put a known non noise making part on your cart and it still makes the noise, you know FOR SURE that it is NOT that part. I know it would be a pain in the ACE but, we could for sure narrow down the problem. Just throwing the offer out there, you seem like a pretty good guy!

List of my upgrades
95 medalist
48V upgrade
2 gauge wires
HD F/R
HD solenoid
700a logisystems controller
D&D motor
