I had the same problem with my setup. It turned out to be the driver. It would "see" the usb/serial adapter but would not communicate. I fixed it by searching the web for a driver for the chipset in the adapter itself. Found one for Vista, loaded it and was good to go. Good luck.

I went out and bought a $219 netbook that runs Windows XP from CompUSA. I now have it running both the Alltrax program as well as the Curtis program.

What is it with the controller manufacturers that they don't bother updating their software for newer operating systems? The software for the Curtis controllers won't run on Vista or Windows 7 no matter what cable/driver/chipset you use.......

Let's face it controller programming is 10 years behind.... I have not seen much change since the beginning...

I am running the Alltrax software on Vista Pro with a $15 Prolific PL2303 chipset adapter. Don't know about the Curtis software.
