48 Volt Conversion for 2007 Freedom SE
Hello all....new member here. When my original batteries are worn out I'm considering upgrading to a 48v from 36v as I have the slowest cart in my retirement community. From reading elsewhere on this site I think I'll need;
1. 6 new 8v batteries. 2. 400+ volt programmable controller 3. 400+ volt solenoid 4. 4 gauge cables everywhere. (is it possible I have these already)? 5. 48v charger (existing charger inadequate)? I may need additional parts but I'm not sure so sure. What about F/R switch, fuses, diodes, potentiometer......whatever that is. There's an EZ Go dealer not far from here, is it possible they'll take my used but fairly new parts in trade? Thanks in advance for the help! Last edited by hit4cycle; 12-21-2010 at 05:15 PM.. Re: 48 Volt Conversion for 2007 Freedom SE
My original post was not clear.....sorry. For a 36-48 volt conversion I think I need the items I listed but am not sure if all are necessary or if I'll need to replace additional components. Any advice from someone who has done this conversion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Your new system will be 48 volts so everything rated 36v except the motor will be replaced. Components like controllers and solenoids are rated in amps (amperage handling capacity) Things you will need: 400 amp controller (costs less if non-programmable) 200amp solenoid 48 volt charger 4 g cables Heavy Duty F&R switching if it's a series cart Hope this helps |

Thanks ScottyB. That helps bring things in focus. I've read here about "performance chips". Is that an worthwhile component to add or replace?

We really need to know if the cart has a toggle switch or lever forward & reverse switch?

Hah....PDS I assume means pretty darn slow? Finally, 2 years ago in a senior softball game after a lifetime of trying. Don't want to take too much of your time. My cart serial # is 2392525. Don't know what you mean by "series" cart. I'm trying to learn enough about my cart so that when I need batteries I'll already know what's involved with a 48v conversion. If I'm not convinced I can do it myself without turning a $500 job into a $1,000 job at least I'll be a halfway informed consumer. My cart tops out about 17 mph whereas I've followed carts in my community doing almost 30.

PDS = precision drive system..... it is a good system for on road driving. There are 3 chips available for the speed controller. there may be one more up available for you which will give 19mph. (freedom chip). Each increase in speed is a reduction in torque. Your cart will run 30 mph with a total redo of the drive system in cluding a 48v conversion a 500a controller and New custom built motor. 24mph costs about half of 30mph in that cart. |

If you can do it for $500.oo, I want to see the receipts. With mine: 400.00 controller 400.00 charger 60.00 solenoid 600.00 battery pack (8 - 6v from Good Sam) 60.00 cables But it's lots faster! Now, you're a little more informed. Good luck with your build. |
