OK this is not rocket science !
If it worked OK before the upgrade !
So it is something which came in the package
probably not cables, probably not resistor , diode , solenoid or fuse
so that leaves motor and controller

replace new with old, 1 at a time whichever one fixes it , then the new one is funky

In the kit you indicated according to BUGGIES you should have gotten a diode and resistor along with solenoid? The RESISTOR ( goes across large cable terminals on solenoid ) is to precharge the filter capacitors in controller to reduce arcking of contacts. The DIODE ( goes across small terminals with color band toward battery side of solenoid ) is to act as a one way switch stopping up to 150 volts of power flowing back into solenoid when power is turned off. Some solenoids come with diode built in, but usually is indicated on solenoid or in literature that comes with solenoid.
BOTH are very important to life of solenoid and controller.

I have a 2001 EZGO 36v and I was in reverse and switched to forward without stopping and now all I get is a pulse in power (forward and reverse). ?
