Default '87 club car battery meter

when I got my '87 club car the batteries had all been taken out, all the wires had been cut. I have wired all the battery wires back up. The only wire not hooked up is for the battery meter. One wire from the meter is hooked up to the key switch, the other goes down by the batteries. When I connect it to positive side of battery it stays on all the time, even with key off. The meter only has two wires. Does any body know where the red wire should go?

Negative of meter goes to main negative on pack, positive on meter goes to the key switch. Use a voltmeter to see which terminal on key switch is on when key is on and off when key is off.

That makes sense. I'll do that. Thanks so much.
