Default G9 Reverse cable melted

my Son in law brought in a G9 today for me to help get it running.. The only real problem was old gas and may be needing a tune up but after driving around for 10 minutes or so the reverse cable got so hot that it melted cover off. I could find no contact with electric wiring or anything like that. What would cause this?
It melted in the area where cable passes under starter but it had no contact with stater. What could cause this?
Thanks

If it melted under the starter/generator, I'd say that did it but I've never seen a starter/generator get hot enough to melt that covering. Does it appear worn and melted? Could have worn down if rubbing against something and then more apt to melted with less sheilding. Just best guess at this point.

After running it for 10 minutes or so smoke started coming from under seat. Raised seat and smoke was coming from cable.. Starter was not hot just cable.
I could find no reason for this. We ran it another hour and it not happen again.

Improper wiring, and frame grounds. Electrical current is using the shift cable as a wire. I doubt the heat of the st/gen is directly causing this. When i got my G2 (<- at left), it also had melted shifter cables.mine were caused by someones added frame grounds for lights, compounded by the (unfused) light system being shorted out. Be careful, on mine, the spring that holds tension on the seat limit cable also got hot and melted into my gas tank, causing a big fuel leak next time i filled up. Start checking for bad wiring, and added frame grounds.

I think you have hit on something.. we had a battery jump box connected to battery and that some how caused the above descried issue. when the jump box was not connected it was not a problem..I will replace cable and hope all is well..
Thanks for the help.

As cgtech said, the cable is acting as a ground cable and that is what is melting it, check all the grounds on the motor and to the frame
