Default Par car back fires

I have a 1995 par car 288 cc motor that runs great with the one problem, When you let off the gas it will back fire every now and then some time loud sometimes not so loud. It has been knick named the fart kart in the campground. I have heard of possible micro switch but haven't located it yet.

Backfiring is caused when fuel enters the cylinder when the cart isn't firing. Gas goes in but nothing is happening to ignite it. The next time the cart sparks the extra fuel all ignites at once causing a backfire. This can be several causes all of which, fortunately, are fairly easy to fix:

1) The fuel adjustment on the carb needs turned down.
2) The micro switch is taking too long to activate and needs adjustment.
3) The accelerator cable needs adjusting as it isn't closing the carb's throttle butterfly all the way.

#3 is the most common.

Check out pages 7 and 9 in the attached service supplement as it speaks to how to rectify backfires. It's for earlier models but applies to your cart too.

Oh, the micro switch is located on the underside of the driver's floor. If you follow the linkage from the accelerator cable on back you'll find it. It has 3 wires attached to it and is hidden a bit by the round disk thing.

In a nutshell, to rectify 1 - 3 above:

1) Turn the fuel adjustment screw on your carb clockwise to decrease the amount of fuel entering your cylinder. Careful, though. Too much and you cart will lose power or not run at all.

2) Turn the round disk that is your micro switch activator counter-clockwise so that it allows your engine to spark a little longer when stopping.

3) See the attached supplement for cable adjustment

You may have to do any one of these or a combination of them to include all.

Yep #3 throttle not closing is the most common. The throttle spring on the carb is wound so it keeps the throttle full open unless something else is acting to pull it closed.
