Again the way I see it right or wrong:
Running a battery totally dead without damage is huge in my opinion. The number one killer of PbA from what I have seen is the battery running totally dead and being damaged. At some time in a batteries life there will be a circumstance that will run the battery dead that the users misses until too late. Unknown drain, miscalculation of capacity, sitting too long, someone else using the battery, no one tries to kill the battery but it happens. If a dead battery simply means you are out of electricity that would be acceptable annoying but acceptable. To be towed home AND have to replace a battery pack... That puts a bad taste in people’s mouth for a pure electric car. It is bad enough to kill $500 worth of golf cart batteries.

I have contacted the Austin chapter EV club; they have a meet next Saturday and are only 16 miles from where I live. Thanks gstoneberg for taking the time to reply and post links.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you here, but if you drain a lithium ion to 0% you will damage it. Only batteries you can do that to and is recommended is NiCD and NiMh.

However there is a solution and EV's use it called a low voltage disconnect to prevent that from happening.

You should get some good info at the Austin club, they are very much on the cutting edge of EV development. I've heard that Austin as a whole is very progressive towards electric vehicles. Let us know what you find out. George

Nate,

I never made it to the meeting, I thought the meeting was the Saturday after I posted. Drove all the way into Austin only to discover it was the following week. I had to go to Arizona that week. They have a meeting today but I won't be able to make this one either. No real life info on Lithium yet. I think I will just contact them via email.

Welcome to Buggies gone Wild Mr. Lithium. I have a few questions for you on this lithium battery. The picture looks like a single cell, no problem though.

Specs needed.

Amp hour rate for 1 hour (1C)
Start voltage and end voltage of 1C test
Peak amps for "X" seconds or minutes
Start voltage and end voltage of peak amp test
Maximum charge amps to 80% capacity
Finish charge voltage
Physical dimensions
Weight
When giving life cycles give voltage range used.
How robust is this cell against over charging and deep discharging?
Operating temperature range
The biggie... cost

After we know this then we can decide if this really is our Lithium battery.

Thanks!
