Never adjusted the valves. I have only had it about 4-6 months.

I tried the sledge on the carb. In rev it wouldn't go, switched to forward and it ran good. Then back to reverse and it ran good too. So now the motor is running and everything is turning like it should. Does this mean I have to replace something?

Might need to do that, the intake valves will tighten up on these engines and generaly run like crap or not at all.
from what your decribing i'd be guessing carb problems also, maybe a good cleaning would help

Thank you very much for your help Ruredy!! Do you suggest taking the carb off and soaking in carb cleaner or should I just run a bottle of carb cleaner throug the gas tank?

Not the sledge
not sure if you need to replace something, just keep the sledge handy
I can't really explain the forward reverse thing, coincidental maybe
valve adjustment and carb cleaning still sounds like a good idea
