Final gear ratio
I have a question about the final gear ratio and some variables that can alter it. Lets say there is a stock EZGO with a final gear ratio of 12:1. Does this take into account the clutches? What I am getting at is if you have stock gears, but you have an aftermarket or snowmobile primary clutch that allows the belt to ride much closer to the top of the clutch than a stock one. Would this alone change the final gear ratio? Thanks

The constant is the 13.32:1 gear ratio in the rear end. The final gearing is indeed with the clutches. Just say that the clutches start at 5:1 at the lowest, then you have an 18.32:1, and as the belt rides up the clutch, it goes 18.31, 18.30................17.32..........and so on in TINY increments until the clutches reach 1:1, THEN you have the true gearing of the rear end. As it goes past that "neutral territory" you end up with a higher final-gear ratio so it goes 12.32:1.....11.32:1....and I'm not sure if it makes it to 10.32 or not. But to answer your question, yes, the clutches do affect the final gear ratio.
Think about a vehicle automatic transmission. 1st -- 3.04:1 2nd -- 2.52:1 3rd -- 2.00:1 4th -- 1.15:1 5th -- 0.78:1 Those are the output numbers of the transmission. Say it has a 4.10:1 rear end, then the FINAL drive ratios are: 1st -- 7.14:1 2nd -- 6.62:1 3rd -- 6.10:1 4th -- 5.25:1 5th -- 4.88:1 Hope this helps to clear it up a little bit. |

Re: Final gear ratio
I got a question. I have 2 different rear ends. Both out of EZ Go Workhorse 1200's. When I rotate the brake hub, it will rotate 1 complete turn to the clutch shafts 13 rotations so its 13/1 ratio. The other rear end is 7/1 ratio. Of these 2 rear ends, which one will give me more top end? 13/1 or 7/1?

Re: Final gear ratio
The higher the number the more torque multiplication, or lower gears. A stock G9 is ~13:1 trans and .9:1 overdrive on the clutches so its ~11:1 final to whatever tire size you have that also changes it. I can look up the G9s exact numbers if you want I posted them here someplace, above is IIRC.
NO NO EZ, I think if your 5th gear is overdrive (<1) then it would be a lower gear than 4.88 or (.78*4.88 )? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gear_ratio G9 is 13.65 forward, 15.25 reverse CVT is 3.2:1 ~ 0.8:1 That would be a low gear in forward of 43.68:1 (13.65*3.2) and high gear of 10.92:1 (13.65*0.8 ) http://www.idavette.net/tech/ratioc.htm So with a 23" tall tire mine measures, at gps 30mph it does down a paved flat road, at 10.92 ratio....I should have 4786rpm. That must be close I know its in that area, my tach broke and I forget what it ran at. Also the clutches are not perfect the belt may not be exactly at the top or bottom of the sheaves, and tire height is hard to get perfect too. Of course the belt engages below the lowest ratio so it is slipping there. It will be in that ratio if you accelerate until you hit shift rpm, where rpm will level off as it shifts and you gain speed. At the .8 ratio it is fully shifted and rpm will go higher for additional speed. Another thing is the ratio on a rear is when both sides rotate (like posi). If you turn only one tire and count the pinion you will get half the ratio. |
