Overhauling the 1990 G2 J38 fuel pump
I have been searching high and low for a rebuild kit (38W-W1391-01-00) for this fuel pump, without luck. Does anyone have a source for these parts? If I cannot readily find the kit I am ready to bypass the pump and install an electric pump to run 2-4psi, which is a much cheaper alternative to purchasing a new pulse pump.

Re: Overhauling the 1990 G2 J38 fuel pump
The first thing I do when I get a "new" cart (new to me is something that is at least 30 years old) is to replace the vacuum pump with an electric. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with the vacuum ones. The work just fine. I just like the guaranteed consistent flows that the electrics provide. Being less expensive and easier to find is a bonus as well.
A lot of guys go back and forth on which system is better. I am pretty convinced that they each work well. It's a preference thing. |

Thanks Lochlin, that is kind of where I am heading with it.

canoehenge..search yamaha G2 fuel pump rebuild kit on eBay, that's where I bought mine and had no issues with it after I rebuilt it.

I couldn't imagine my old G2 with one of those obnoxious electric "rattle pumps" on it. To me, those pumps are screaming "Rig-job repairs everywhere, do not buy me"!

Couldn't agree more. Have a customer who has one with a 15 gallon boat gas tank in his bagwell. Hate working on that cart.

Any Mikuni style 3 port fuel pump will work. It's usually just the "clocking" of the fuel tank inlet/carb and pulsar lines that are different.

Re: Overhauling the 1990 G2 J38 fuel pump
I have a vacuum pump on my VC 460 powered G14 and an electric pump on the 440 snowmobile powered harley. Both work well. You certainly cannot hear the modern low pressure electric's sound with the engine running. In fact the cart is set up to power up the pump with the ignition on and is started with a momentary on switch for the starter.Even then with the body closed you can barely hear the pump.P.S Some people warned of overpowering the tillotson carb with the electric pump. NO problem. Also with the 440 suzuki engine No problem.
