Default Valve adjustment question

I studied the valve adjustment post and checked my cart and decided to adjust the valves yesterday. Went ok, compression is good, but smokes and bogs a little more now. I went back and looked at the valve adjustment post again, and the as the picture shows, the feeler gauge is on top of the cam, not the valve. Is this correct? I’m somewhat mechanically inclined, but does this get you the same result as actually measuring on top of the valve?

I’ve always thought you needed to measure on top of the valve itself.

Should have the same results, just easier to adjust with the feeler gauge on the cam.

You did adjust with the cam lobe down right?

Yes, the lobe was down. Just seems to bog, and smoke a little more than it did before I adjusted them. Probably need to go back thru it again.

If the rockers are standard 1:1 ratio then the clearance would be the same on cam lobe and valve tip measurements.

If for example they are 1:5 ratio then the measurement should be at the valve.
So in this case if you set .004 at the cam lobe the valve tip clearance would be .002 which is too tight.

I think I found that the stock ratio is 1:1 so you should be good to go measuring at the cam lobe.
