Default rebuilding 1982 J17 questions

Does the lower engine block have a gasket between the two sides?

No gasket. Just use Yamabond and be sure not to get any on the bearings.

I used honda bond because the honda dealer was closer lol. do not just use any kinda of gasket maker it needs to be able to hold up to gas/oil and the heat of an air cooled engine. don't skimp here you don't wanna have to tear it back down later.

No the piston for the J17 is the same as all other G1's, just uses different jug and head ect..

This may be a dumb question but should I fill the crank case with some oil as I build it back up?

Also will I need a crank case separator tool to separate the two pieces of the crankcase?

no don't fill the crank case. the crank bearings will probably have some type of grease in them if not after you assemble the cases but before you install the crank seals lightly oil them with either the oil you use for premix or a quality motor oil. also lightly oil the wrist pin bearing, piston and rings and the cylinder wall.

yes. I used a standard bar puller to sperate the cases from the crank. I bought the tusk case spliting tool and the crank installer but I found the splitting tool is to big for the g1. make sure to get the adapter kit with what ever you buy as it is needed, its part of the small 3 pieces with that half moon shape. Basically you push the crank out of the cases, r&r the bearings in the case halves then use the install tool to pull the crank into each half. some people do however press the crank into the case. here is my first build.
little tip, lubricate the threads on the install tool on reassembly.

heres the tool set I bought, but I would just but the tusk crank installer tool and the adapter kit.
