1999 EZ-GO Knock & Wanting to take off

Okay so I have a new to me 1999 ezgo and it's been great. But yesterday I went to stop at a stop sign, left off the pedal and the last rotation of the engine has a knock. It had been running for a while, the engine was pretty hot. Decided to keep driving and stop and then all of a sudden it started to rev up and move after I had my foot off the gas.

Any ideas? I haven't gotten to drive it today, figured I'd better change out the oil anyway, should I go synthetic btw? What type and how much? (I don't have a manual and I work 15 hour days so I'm limited on time)
