Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
The pack (in modules) is a 7S2P or 7 series of 2 modules in parallel or 14S2P in cells.
If You were to split the pack in the middle ( 7 modules + 7 modules), one of the parallel pair of modules would be split and cause imbalance issues with the BMS. In order to keep the pairs together, the pack is physically installed as 8 modules (4 pairs) + 6 modules (3 pairs). Not trying to confuse anyone, but if you were to look up the arrangement of the lithium cell pouches inside the single Leaf modules, the overall Lithium pack is 14S4P cells since each module is 2S2P cells: |

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
That is the other thing I forgot, if You were to split 7 + 7 modules you would need to run three high current cables, by splitting 8 + 6 You just need a single cable between modules.
Make the cable no longer than it needs to be and don't place any fuses on the cable since the pack cannot be undone while the BMS is connected. |

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
I split mine 8 & 6 just because that was what maximized the space. I did mine in 2 parallel sets of 7 in series. No bms and they are still perfectly balanced several yrs later.

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
Jim C, do you have some kind of high voltage or low voltage cut off? and what kind of charger are you using?

Low voltage is in the JLD which I havn't put on yet, lol, but that one's easy enough to monitor till I do. Charger is Quick Charge with custom lithium profile, which is also has a high voltage cutoff. |

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
So no, there isn't any individual cell monitoring.
Using lithium without a BMS can be done, but I wouldn't want to risk my investment. Plus one of the main reasons I switched to lithium is less maintenence. I don't want to have to worry about manually checking each cell's charge and discharge voltage every time I use the cart. |

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
My understanding of such matters always needs to be explained in 2nd grade terms.
What I don't get about the controller HV cutoff is.....does the charging of a pack "go thru" the controller to allow the controller to cut off the charge? I get how my BMS monitors each cell and provides the HV cutoff, but I don't get how my controller would be "involved". |

Re: Lithium hunting cart overhaul
I look at the BMS as a second layer of protection since my charger won't overcharge unless it fails. Also, the BMS monitors each cell for overcharge protection where as the charger only sees the whole pack voltage. I personally would not run without these two layers of protection. My undercharge protection is a simple very loud alarm that sounds if any cell goes below the low voltage setpoint. It has no impact on driving the cart. I have only had it go off once while driving and only under full throttle so I could limp home at lower throttle without the alarm sounding.
