Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade

Your question is outside my realm of knowledge, but I suspect you can find one that will pass more current than can be provided by any battery pack you can stuff under the seat of that nice looking cart. |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
With 36v there is only so much current the motor will take no mater what size controller. When I put my Amp meter in, I saw that even with a 480 Amp controller and 48v, the stock motor would not get over 300 Amps unless I was going up hill with my foot on the brake. With 36v it would be less.

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
The answer lies in how many amps will your motor handle before it melts down or burns up?
Most engineers agree that 400 amps is a safe limit for most stock motors. That's not a heck of a lot at 36 volts but it is considerably more at 48 volts. I have seen quite a few stock motors run on 500 amps and up for a year or more. MUCH depends upon the loads and terrain and mostly the driver. 36v systems draw/use more amperage for a given task than 48v systems |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
I'd like to stay with 36v, should I start by using larger ga. wire and larger speed control?

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Start by upgrading the cable system and F&R, that way you are ready to handle the increased amperage when you get a bigger controller.
Yes, the controller will need a larger solenoid also |

Re: 94 Medalist speed/torque upgrade
Basically what Scotty said, but I'll post it anyway.

You've got a series drive system and total current flows through the battery pack, solenoid, F/R switch, controller, motor stator and motor armature, so the maximum current is limited by the weakest link in the chain. You won't get more speed without upping the voltage, but it won't slow down as much on the hills with a better current delivery system to the motor. Personally, I would go with 36-48V rated components, so going to 48V at a later date would only require adding two more 6V batteries to the pack. 4ga cables will probably suffice, but I prefer 2ga. (Be sure to replace all of them. Remember - Weakest link in the chain. ) |
