Question No reverse 78 marathon

I've bought this cart a week ago and have been in the shop since then. I replaced one cable that corroded and cleaned batteries and battery connections and motor connections. The batt voltage is 37-38v after sitting. I checked the F/R switch, cleaned and dressed an arc mark on one pair of lugs. The cart solenoid clicks and engages when in forward and the cart moves. The resistor assembly appears near new. I checked the motor windings,I have continuity S1 to S2 and A1 to A2 , no cont A1 to S1. I have a wiring diagram and it appears the cables are located properly.
If the cart motor runs forward shouldn't it be able to run in reverse?

Welcome to BGW!

You are correct and so are your motor continuity readings... have you tested the reverse MS?

It has a reverse MS but it wasn't wired up. Can't tell if it has worked for some time. Doesn't the reverse MS just run a buzzer?

It could be on a 78 ??? check to see if your forward MS is working with the cart in reverse? Are you saying there is no solenoid click in reverse? If solenoid clicks in F&R then check the F&R main lugs for continuity when in Reverse.

There is no click in reverse. I doesn't click when you put in F. It doesn't have a MS on F or R wired up. The solenoid clicks when the throttle arm opens the MS located by the "wiper" assembly, with switch on.

Okay well that's fine but you need to figure out why the solenoid is not being activated in reverse as it is in forward .... that sounds like the problem to me

Thanks. With lack of switches on For or Rev I'll have to find way to energize solenoid in Rev. Might end up putting MS's in for forward and reverse to get it to work. Thanks again, its been quite a learning experience.

You can bring 36v+ to the key from key to the Potentiometer MS from there to the solenoid activation. Eliminating the F&R MSs.

I went back out and took F/R switch out and found that the MS that activates on Rev, actually still worked . I hooked one side to S1 and other to on/off switch. Didn't look like it would even move but the cart goes both directions now!!
Really appreciate the help, you're the man!
