looking for brake info/help...newbie here
I just bought a 96 TXT to use basically at the beach. It had very little brakes when I got it. You would have to press the pedal to the point of the parking lock to get it to stop. I put a 5" lift with bigger tires and rear seat for the kids and replaced the brake pads. I have no brakes now. The cables hang with some play undeneath. I had to adjust the screw in the drum to get it to close. I did notice after I replaced the pads and before I closed it and adjusted the screw that only the bottom of the rear pad would move on both sides. Is that normal? I did search some and read that with a lift stock breaks may not be enough but I need to do this in baby steps. How much play should be underneath the cart too with the cables? Is there a pictorial on here by chance of adjusting the cables? Thanks

Re: looking for brake info/help...newbie here
It is important to adjust the shoes properly first.
96 was a brake change year, are you sure you got the right shoes? Gas or electric? Once shoes are adjust so they just barely drag punp the peddle a hard a few times and check to see if your shoe adjustment held or needs re adjusting... repeat this process a few times for each side until the shoes are just right there at the brink of contact and very little peddle movement results in the shoes contacting the drum, now you are ready for a cable adjustment. Tighten the cables so you can still catch the parking brake keeper and yet very little travel is required to stop the wheel while in the air and turning by hand... this is about as good as stock golf cart brakes get..... |

Adjust the shoes properly first! Can't stress that enough .......
Cable adjustment is at the pressure equalizer, where the cables connect to the brake peddle rod. |

Re: looking for brake info/help...newbie here
Welcome to BGW Cableguy,
After adjusting your shoes follow each cable from the rear wheels to under the floorboard. You will see where both cables come to one bracket. That bracket has a very long rod attatched to it that goes to your brake pedal, the forward end of the rod also has a spring and both ends of the rod have 2 nuts each end, adjust the rear nuts to take slack out of the brake cables. The forward nuts are to slacken or tighten the tension on the spring. The second nut on each end is a lock nut, also the rod should have flat spots in the middle to hold with an adjustable wrench. I hope that clears it up a little. Gonk Here is a link to your manual. http://bennettgolfcars.ca/manuals/ez...TXT%20PDSl.pdf on page E-3 or in acrobat page 39 of 188 you will see what you need in detail B. |

Disconnect both brake cables and make sure they are free moving.
If they are original, 96 is alot of years and any drag will cause continued problems. |
