2 Stroke engine Gasoline advice
Hi, I'm new to the forum but have already benefited from my first question (thanks).
I've already read a bunch of posts/topic related to the 2 stroke engines not running well and I'd like to offer my own experience on this topic. My son and I bought the 1985 Marathon that was well maintained and is in good shape - about a month ago. First thing we did was fill the gas tank which was almost empty. We just ignorantly used 89 octane ethanol from the local Marathon gas station. (Funny, I didn't realize before that the gas station is the same name as our golf cart!). After less than half an hour of running over the next few days, it started running terrible. Wouldn't start, bogged down, etc. After removing the carb, cleaning the jets - it started running better, but after a day or two, it was back to running bad again. As a coincidence, I noticed a gas pump off to the side - at the gas station that had something called 'REC 90'. They said it's for 'off-road' vehicles, boats, etc. And, it didn't have ethanol in it. I realized that I had forgotten what I heard years ago, that older engines aren't designed for ethanol. And I also wondered if putting ethanol in the golf cart had started to dissolve contaminants like varnish or something else that might be clogging up the fuel system. Seems like I was right. We drained the ethanol gas, put 'Sea Foam' in the gas tank, and filled it with the REC 90 gasoline. It worked. After running it for just a few minutes, the power, smoothness of the engine, and everything else was back. And it's been running well ever since. So, if you have an older cart and you're filling it up with normal gas, that might be your problem. One more thing. I found a website that stated that in Ohio, it is not required for a gas station to label the gas that has ethanol in it. So, if you think you're getting non-ethanol gas just because they don't advertise it, you could be mistaken. Thought this would be good to share. Thanks! |

Re: 2 Stroke engine Gasoline advice
Interesting, Glad ya got it running again........ I've been using 85 octane in my 85 Marathon for 20 years with no problems, I'm sure it's the ethanol blend....
The only non-ethanol available here is the high 92 octane premium, my buggy doesn't run well on that as it's designed for the lower 85 octane |
