My first issue is, when I let off the throttle and it is coasting down it back fires. Any adjustments I can do to the carb to stop this?

That's a simple fix - if you look at the throttle cable, it goes through the arm on top of the carb, there is a spring around it and then there is the throttle "stop" ... On a normal setup. On YOURS I would be willing to bet there is no spring, and this is what is causing the trouble. That spring keeps the butterfly all the way closed when you let up on the gas, without it the carb will keep feeding a small amount of fuel while coasting and as soon as you hit the pedal again, BAM it ignites and You have a backfire.

Replace the spring and you'll be fine - in a pinch, half a spring from a ballpoint pen will work but that'll wear out pretty fast so best to find a spring about 1/2" long and 1/8" around that's a little heavier (Home Depot or Lowes should have something)
