Default 20.9 mph too fast?

After getting good compression readings and airing up the stock sized tires (18's) to 20 psi, I adjusted the govenor and got a GPS top speed of 20.9 mph. I don't have a tach yet so I'm not sure if I'm spinning it too fast. Cart is an 84 marathon gas on stock tires and premix gas/oil 100:1. What would be a safe top speed so it won't overrev?

There is no direct equation between speed and rpm's. I ran my stock Yamaha motor at about 4200 rpms and could get 31 to 32 mph.

The only way to tell for sure is with a tach.

I don't have either. I asked my wife to drive my Honda Civic after me, running at full speed. I found out my speed: 21 mph with a 20" diameter tire.

My 88 2pg runs at 22 mph on 20" tires. No problems.

Thanks for the input. I'll be doing a battery tray for a group 31 AGM battery I already have and a custom air filter setup next.

Hit Ebay for a cheap tach, they're right around $15 and will end any questions - Sassy is right that at 5k you are beginning to risk engine damage (factory redline is listed as 5k) ... Spending the $15 now and keeping an eye on your trigger foot will eliminate the potential for a much more expensive and involved fix down the road
