Backfireing problem
I am new to the gas carts I have a 85 Ezgo it cranks and runs great at high speed but cuts out and backfires on slow speed. I have read some threads on this but confused , my card bas no spring at all on the throttle cable and fromn what I have read is prob my issue. I got this cart like this so don't really understand it. when I push the throttle pedal only thing that moves is the cable sliding through the carb yet it excellerates? very confusing that nothing on carb itself moves when I push pedal yet it speeds up? Wow nothing like I am use to, I assume the spring is an issue but can someone explain why when I push the pedal nothing on carb moves? I am old and stupid and feel like an idiot but this blows me away. Thanks Adam

Re: Backfireing problem
You have the spring just under the throttle plate arm on top of carb in pic. It looks as though one end is not hooked to proper location to give you the retraction you need. .

Re: Backfireing problem
Thank you I will see f I can figure that out.The thing that has me confused when I push the excellerator the cable pushes through the throttle arm rather than pulling the throttle arm. it does excellerate but the throttle arm does not move? I don't get it

Re: Backfireing problem
On the shelf (or no cables attached) the carb throttle will be held wide open (backwards from most small engines) by what I will call the throttle open spring. So the accelerator basically pulls the throttle back to closed. The throttle has to close before the ignition shuts off to prevent fuel from being drawn into a dead cylinder and backfiring when the ignition comes back on. The ignition is turned on and off with a limit switch activated by the accelerator. Your accelerator cable is supposed to go thru the throttle arm then thread thru a spring and then to the barrel stop. This spring overcomes the pressure of the throttle open spring and lets the accelerator cable move enough to turn the ignition on before opening the throttle on the carb. When you push the accelerator, the ignition limit makes (turns igintion on) before the throttle moves and vice versa when you let off the accelerator. I have seen pictures of what looks like springs from pens on them but I wound up with a little heavier spring on mine. It will be a small diameter spring but long. I dont have any pictures of mine or I would post. You have a 3rd cable I dont have I am guessing is oil injection (I see the hose on the intake). I would be careful to adjust that properly. Hope this helps, good luck with it.

Re: Backfireing problem
sbklf Thank you so much, you have wrote this where my simple mind can understand. I will give this a shot tomorrow. I have adjusted that 3rd cable not know what it was so not knowing where it belongs I am going to mix 128-1 then remove my oil injection after it has had time to prime the fuel lines. I guess I am lucky I have not seized up the motor making and adjustment on it. Also I have very poor power even at full throttle. think it may be a stopped up muffler as it seems to have oil burn off from exterior of muffler after running a while. Thanks again Adam

Re: Backfireing problem
Glad to be of assistance, I had to learn from someone here on the same issue.
One of the cables on the throttle is the governor and if not adjusted correctly could be keeping it from revving. I wound up making my governor adjustments by running it with the rear end jacked up and watching it in action. You can watch the driven clutch expand and move the arm and limit the throttle. It's a clever setup (IMO). Kevin |

Re: Backfireing problem
Ok fixed the spring at base of carb where the cable goes through as well as added the 1'' spring to the cable and now it runs really good.still have a little backfireing but runs smooth at all speeds. I am BBQ the muffler to burn out some of the old oil and stuff and see if that fixed the backfireing. I also DC'd the oil injection and just went to mix 100-1 so far so good.will see if the BBQ of the muffler fixed the backfireing or if I need more carb adjustments. set at 1 1/2 turns out at this time. Thanks Adam
