Jump start dead 48 volt cart with dead batteries
When any of my club members leaves their cart for a couple of months and the batteries die, I have been charging them one at a time to bring them up so the main charger will take over. I talked to a Club Car service tech today that showed me he had an old lester charger that he had switched a couple of wires around inside and put battery clamps on the end of the DC cord. He then just jumps the whole pack with the cart charger disconnected and lets it charge for a couple of minutes and then plugs in the cart charger and it takes over.
It seems quite safe if you are careful jumping the main pack. Any opinions? Have any of you done this? It sure would make it a lot easier than charging each battery. Harry |

Re: Jump start dead 48 volt cart with dead batteries
All you have to do is by-pass the charger relay inside the charger and it comes ON at full power as soon as You plugged it to AC.
Charging the entire pack like that is better than "partially" charging each battery to a different amount. Since there is no OBC involved in regulating the current, the charger may get very hot or pop the breaker if the batteries are really dead due to the increased charging current. You should always connect the charger DC cord to the pack first and then connect the charger to the AC outlet. When disconnecting, remove the AC plug first and then disconnect from the batteries. This will prevent sparks near the batteries that could be releasing explosive gasses during the forced charge. |
