Tapping a New Battery Terminal
A while back I asked about how to do this. Well now I am right in the middle of it and have discovered some questions about it. The biggest one right now in the process is, "How far down should the tap go? In other words I have center punched it, drilled 3/4" down, and I am now using the tap to thread it. It is only going down about 1/2". Is this it or am I not going far enough. It seems to be meeting resistance.

Re: Tapping a New Battery Terminal
Don't blow up your battery! If you go too far there is a possibilty of a big boom.
The procedure is documented in here somewhere....Some one will help find it. Look at the bottom of this page...similar threads. It's the first one in line! Freak meltdown.. Last edited by tonyton; 07-08-2009 at 05:33 PM.. Reason: Thread location |

Re: Tapping a New Battery Terminal
All so you need a plug tap They don't have the lead (taper) that standard taps have.

Re: Tapping a New Battery Terminal
As Doomsman said; You need a plug tap in addition to a standard tape. The plug tap is flat on the bottom and doesn't have the starter threads. I have made plug taps before by slowly grinding a standard tap down till it is solid threads. You have to go slow and keep it cooled down since it is hardened steel.
