Default Batteries for a 87 three wheeler

I have just picked up a EZGO three wheeler that needs batteries. Serial #02787. I think this is a 1987 if the code is like my 96 gas EZGO. The cart was free but I didn't get a charger and it needs batteries.
Will this cart stand 48 volts, stock, or should I stay with 36 volts?
I'm going to have to buy a charger and batteries either way.
The three wheelers are not my favorites so I don't want to start adding controllers etc........

I wanted to order my batteries on Monday. Does anyone have any recommendations......
I've read post about the resistors on these carts not wanting to go slow, either WOT or stopped, so I'm going to install a Papst 36 to 48 volt cooling fan to see if that helps. I got a whole case of them, brand new, out of a dumpster.
I would still like to hear for someone with more experience. I am used to working on gas carts.
Thanks

Rusty1,

There is another version of the two line saying at the bottom of your post that fits me well.
It goes - Give a man a fish and feed him for a day or teach a man to fish and he will be buying fishing tackle the rest of his life (-:
