You can start by taking your cart to someone that knows more about carts than you do. Where did you get the information that just adding 8 volt batteries was OK?

If your lucky the controller just went into overvoltage shutdown to protect itself.....of coarse if your not lucky well....you get the idea. Take 1 or 2 batts out of the string and see if it will work or replace the 48 volt pack with 36 volts to see if it ok.
