89 Marathon Rear Springs and Shock questions..
I am in the process of installing an economy lift kit(Buggies Unlimited) on my 89 Marathon. I want to change out the stock rear springs and replace them with ones that are heavier duty so that I can put a rear seat on at some point. What is the lb rating of the stock springs? I think I read somewhere 150-200lb? How high should I go with the replacements? 400lb? Since it is a 4 inch lift kit can I just buy a 4 inch taller spring and skip installing the riser from the kit for the springs? Maybe something like this? http://pitstopusa.com/i-5061948-eiba...-d-400-lb.html
Are there any shocks that can be bought at an auto parts store that will fit? I know...lots of questions LOL Thanks... |

Re: 89 Marathon Rear Springs and Shock questions..
I have a 88 and I used 500# and it rides good, and I have the 4in lift. I got them off ebay for $5.00 about 3 years ago.

Monroe 32207.Leave the steel-bushing out of the top eye,and use the Ez-Go lower sleeve,they are a bolt-on.

Re: 89 Marathon Rear Springs and Shock questions..
Here is my solution. I swapped out the original shocks with shocks from a Yamaha G1 rear. The extra coilover gives alot more payload.

Thanks 1989Marathon. Do you know the spring rate of the coilover shocks? How much lift do you have there?

Re: 89 Marathon Rear Springs and Shock questions..
Hay guys after reading these post I went to the shop yesterday looked up a spare set of coil overs (CHROME) that I had left over from my early Sportster rebuild removed the old shocks & springs prefit the coil overs top went right on and the bottom needed the steel bushing pressed out of the old shocks and installed in the lower bushing of the new. With a little grinding of the lower shock mount they fit right on. No other spring needed so I'm going to remove the old spring mounts to clean things up. Guess what now I have a 5" lift 0 $ out of pocket. Now on to the front think I'm going to build my own axle going to try to correct the caster problem I just can't to seem to grasp the Neg.caster built in the front axle. Will keep you posted.
