Default What is best RXV year? Years to AVOID and why?

I am looking to purchase a newer RXV drive ezgo and have a few questions.

1. When did they start making RXV models? I think 2008? Is all ezgo models RXV starting in 2008?

2. I was told to avoid 2008-2009 RXV models, can someone explain why? Is it only 2008? or 2009 as well. With this being said should I only look for 2010+?

3. I am seeing 36v and 48v models. Is this year specific or a dealer option? I would like to get a 48v ezgo RXV but not sure which year to look for this.

4. Any other RXV information based on year would be helpful.

I think the 2012.5 and newer RXV is best bet. Has Curtis controller instead of Danaher controller, some Danaher related parts are very hard to come by. 36v and 48v TXTs were/are still offered alongside the always-48v RXV. Early RXV had a troublesome motor brake identified by the lever on the side.

Cgtech is correct ALL RXV's are all 48v.

Newer RXV's Have Curtis controller earlier RXV's had danaher controller.
Both Danaher and Curtis controllers are very reliable and stable.
Since EZ GO has moved to Curtis controller, They sell a adapter harness to go from danaher to curtis.

All RXV models are very reliable and easy to maintain.
The major problems with early RXV's had to do with several factors.

1) Brake failure--(brake with handle)

A. Caused by poor design of brake
B. Misuse/abuse of brake handle
C. Operator abuse-- locking brakes up while driving ect.

Replace with non handle brake to fix. part cost $250.00 +/-

2) Solenoid problems

fixed by replacing weak solenoid

3) Battery problems

trojan 12v batteries seem to have high failure rate. -- use Crown or other batteries

Bulk watering systems over/under watering batteries-- caused battery failures.

4) Lack of understanding of RXV controller/electronics/operation

Consult BGW website BEFORE attemting repair/modifications of electrical stuff.

No reason to shy away from any year RXV.
All use same motor/drive system and electronics are all reliable if not
"fiddled" with.

Just find a nice well maintained RXV and enjoy !!!!

Please keep us posted!
Will try to help with questions.

Thanks for the responses.

I hear the RXV's can be programmed to run 20mph stock? When you say 'fiddle' with, does this fall under that category?

So the 2009 RXV didnt have a brake pedal on the floor? you brake with your hand?? (handle?)
If i purchase a 2009 RXV and change the brakes and replace a bad solenoid, it will be good as new ones pretty much?

No, "Motor brake" has a handle (this brake device is located on the end of the motor). Still has a brake pedal, but its not connected to any brakes at the wheels. Its connected to the motor controller, which uses brake pedal input to use the motor as a generator to slow the vehicle. The "Motor brake" serves as a "parking brake" that the controller can turn on and off (with no power applied, it is locked) as needed to secure a already stopped vehicle without consuming power to hold the motor still at zero rpm. This motor brake serves no role in slowing down a normally working cart, it is ONLY intended to hold a already stopped vehicle. In the event of a major system failure, or pressing the brake pedal all the way to the floor (Panic Stop, VERY harmful to motor brake), is the only time the motor brake would ever lock while the vehicle is moving.

Look at the motor brake, if it has the lever (not a lot of those left anymore) its the old style. Look at the solenoid, if it has 4 screw terminals on top and says "trombetta" on it, then it is newer style upgrade. The motor brake still is, and will always be, susceptible to damage by "panic stops" that cause the motor brake to lock while the vehicle is moving.

Cg is correct --
Sorry about confusion as to brake lever.

I believe the motor brake was changed to " non lever" type from factory in 2010.
Most carts have had the the "upgraded" or no handle brake installed as a replacement for a failed "lever" or "handle" brake.

Even if the cart you are looking at has a handle or lever brake on motor, the brake can be replaced for about $250.00 for part (approx cost from EZ GO)

Most solenoids already upgraded by now also.

Batteries --- They are a crapshoot on any cart.
Have seen golf course trojans last more than a year or die in shop.

We referb and sell RXV's-- we have no issues with 2008/2009 carts once
solenoid and brake is changed/upgraded.

The 20 mph speed (19.5 actually) is a dealer selectable option.
Dealer selectable as the dealers are the only ones to have the hand Held programmer
required.
( other than the people who bought them on ebay.....)

The "fiddling" i was referring to was attempting to add accessories
or "Wire in" state of charge meters ect. to RXV wire harness..
This almost always ends in a blown controller ($$$.$$)

You can easily add stuff to RXV's -- Just leave factory wire harness alone.
Ask BEFORE you start if unsure.

Hope this helps !!!

Great info thanks!

So to get the 19.5 mph can I take the cart to a dealer and pay them to program it? Any clue what people charge for that?

Im looking to go pickup a 2009 possibly today, I will have to post pictures to figure out where the hand brake / solenoid is.

"Parking/emergency" brake is on the end of the motor.

Type of brake can be determined by looking under seat at motor.

Old style brake will have a handle or lever. New style has smooth case-no handle.

Test drive first !!
Good luck !!

Program to 20mph--- some dealers charge a small fee some for free-- some are Jerks.
