help me buy a golf cart trailer
I recently sold my 4 by 8 trailer because I had zero or negative tongue weight. I have an electric cart so most of the weight is in the back and it was nearly impossible to back up onto the trailer. is it was too narrow. So I sold.
I am looking at a 5x10. how much tongue weight should I have? I know that what I had was dangerous. The front wheel rto the front of battts is 49. To middle is 57 and end 70. the axle on the 5 by 10 trailer is at 60 inches. so most of the way it should be in the middle. I know I could always put on in reverse but I'd rather be pulling forward. feedback tips ideas? what do you guys use? |

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
I have had a couple of 5x8 trailers over the years.....that was my choice as the 10 footers were just to long for what I was using them for.....and finding a 5x8 was just as easy to find. I also always got ones that had a fold down gate built in so no need for ramps....and could just back the cart in to place the weight forward. They were like the one below......

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
We use a 5x8 landscape-style trailer and back them on most of the time, especially if it has a rear seat(it won't fit forward with the ramp-gate closed). My big trailer is a 6x16,we drive them on forward, since it has set-back tandem-axles,or put 4 on it sideways.Hope this helps.

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
My little trailer is 6 X 10 with the rear gate. 8 ft is too short for me. Txt with a rear seat is near 9 1/2 ft and my workhorses are near 10. Plus I hate backing a short trailer...

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
The only problem with tilt-beds,is that if you drive on,and it doesn't tilt, you need to man-handle it down, and if its' wet,it gets real interesting. The gate is nice, since you don't need to store it,if you use ramps, the arched ones make it alot easier with a stock cart, since they won't get hung up at the deck-edge.Hope this helps.

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
I use a drop axle tilt. It's the best and I've had about every type. It has big truck size tires yet the floor is only inches off the ground = easy loading and low center of gravity for towing stability

Re: help me buy a golf cart trailer
In case you wonder where did I get such a trailer... it is a modified U haul type ditch witch trailer. I simply extended the rear by 1 ft so the carts rear wheels could get on before the tilting began, and the front by 1 foot, this open angle iron section which creates a tire cradle. When the cart is cinched down it holds the front wheels in the cradle and there is no movement.
It is very easy to operate... and dead carts roll up the gentle incline pretty easy. It was my 'go to' recovery trailer when I was in the service business. Now it's the only open cart trailer I have. I have an enclosed 6x14 tandem axle that works well also - you can't have too many trailers. |
