Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
Is there a way to connect two chargers to a 48v golf cart to create charging redundancy so to speak? I have Select-A-Charge on board SCO4815 charger and Battery Tender BTHF48-10 charger. How do I connect both to the batteries to create redundancy? Do I need some sort of changeover/transfer switch on DC output side? Or do I simply install and connect both chargers as if the other did not exist and both chargers will share the charging responsibility? Do I need some sort of AC side contactor that would supply AC power to only one charger at a time and will sense primary charger failure and switch to the backup?
Any help with this crazy idea will be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
I don't have a solution for you, but i am curious why you would need a redundant back up charger. Most chargers last a long time if they are treated well.

Why would one want to add more complex electrical circuitry?

Re: Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
Because the cart is being used by my wife and I am 150 miles away 4-5 days a week. There is no way for her to know if the batteries are charging or not. So I am trying to create redundancy that would ensure she has charged batteries in the morning.

Re: Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
I got you trumped as I'm over 500 miles away for 4 weeks at a time.... Wife uses cart and plugs in the charger when finished just like I do. DPI Accusense Charger she knows the needle jumps up when the charger starts and gradually falls down and that there will be 53.0 volts on the dash board meter.....

Re: Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
Your saying that your wife is dependent on a golf cart for transportation?

Re: Redundant Battery Charger Configuration
Install a led volt meter and if she sees the voltage slowly start to rise after plugging in the charger then the charger is working. If you're really that worried about the charger failing, then buy a second charger, if the first charger fails then plug the back up charger in.
