12volt Battery or Reducer
I have a stretched street legal 48 volt EzGo cart. See below pic. I have been running a 12volt lawnmower battery and onboard charger for about 6 years. It is for my headlights, taillights and brake lights. I replace the battery about every 2 years. It is time for a new battery and I have been thinking if maybe I should buy a reducer and use the main pack instead. Any thoughts on which way to go?
Money is not a big issue. I don't mind buying a battery every few years. But I think my headlights will be brighter with the reducer and I wouldn't have to worry about the 12volt battery going dead. My cart is 48 volts. I think I can take the positive and negative wires off the 12 volt battery and just wire them into the reducer. I shouldn't have to do anything else other than wire the reducer to my 48 volt pack...... Correct? It should be as easy as 4 wires..... I think. |

Re: 12volt Battery or Reducer
All the things you said sound correct to me. Dont forget a fuse. While it Does work, that mower battery was never designed for deep cycle use (significant discharge every use before recharge).

Re: 12volt Battery or Reducer
i would go with a 48v reducer rated at 15 amp, 180 watt
yes you could take the existing 12v wires ( add a fuse) to the reducer |

Re: 12volt Battery or Reducer
If you have a AM/FM radio on cart you will loose station memory settings when you turn reducer off. The setup you have is best if you want to keep radio memory settings.

Re: 12volt Battery or Reducer
Or, you could buy a DPI or Surepower convertor which includes a "switched" and "unswitched" output to keep your settings..

Re: 12volt Battery or Reducer
Nope no radio.
I do not use the key switch. I want to hook it to the main pack. Then take the 2 wires off my 12 volt battery and wire them to the output on the reducer. 4 wires total. 2 input and 2 output. No key switch. Is it possible and as easy as that? |
