Club Car completely dead

Hi all:

My friend has a 2003 DS Club Car that he had plugged in to a Powerdrive 2 charger for six months in storage. When I went to pickup it was completely dead and the charger when plugged it did nothing. The 2015 Trogan Batteries were new when he went to store it when he was deployed.

My question:

Were do I start? How do I test charger? Should I charge each battery and test?

What a mess :-(

Here is my recommendation since you also have to reset the OBC.

Make sure all batteries have enough electrolyte to cover the plates, but don't fill them up at this time.

Disconnect the pack negative.

Set your 12v automobile charger to the 2 amp setting (do not plug into AC).

Place the leads of the 12v charger on each battery.

Use alligator clips or equivalent to hold your voltmeter probes on the battery posts of the battery being charged.

Plug the 12v charger to AC outlet and allow the charger to stay ON until the voltage reads 10v.

Disconnect the AC plug first, then the leads from the battery.

Repeat the procedure above for each battery.

Connect the pack negative cable and use the 48v charger as usual to charge the cart.

Thanks !! I remember you sergio. Appreciate the fast response. This is a mess. I sold this cart to him and he stored when deployed. Please remind me how to reset the OBC. Is there a way to test the charger? Been spoiled by our Garia... Nothing to do but drive :-)

Leaving the Pack Negative cable disconnected during the charging procedure will allow the OBC enough time to reset (more than 10 minutes).

If the batteries are severely discharged, they will produce a lot more explosive gasses than normal, so make sure the AC plug is the last thing You plug and the first thing you unplug, that will minimize the chance for a spark at the battery posts.

The 12v charger will not be able to maintain that voltage while regulating at 2 amps, so it will charge at a much lower voltage, and maybe 4 to 5 amps while the battery climbs to 10v.

The charger needs a minimum pack voltage before it will start, so You need to charge the batteries first.

How low did the batteries get?

I had a friend in a similar situation, with total pack voltage of 6.2V of 48. I checked water levels and then took a set of jumer cables and jumped from one fulluy charged cart to this one. The charger saw the proper voltage to operate. After 5 minutes, removed the cables from the good cart first and then from dead cart. After a full charge in which the charger shut off, the cart was driven 2 miles to the course and he played 27 holes without issue. Batteries have lasted until today. That was a year and a half ago.

Yes, it will work for 8v batteties, the 12v charger output voltage will drop as it tries to limit the output current.

You should always reset the OBC anytime you use any external charging source (or use it as the jumper source).
