Default 2008 G29 Electric - Motor stays energized at a stop

I have a friend (not a member of BGW yet, but will be after today),who is a retired owner of Yamaha Golf Cart shop (still run by his sons) that specializes in custom stretched carts; first responder, handicap with ramps, multi-passenger, etc. He has come into possession of a 2008 G29, stock electrically, that their company originally stretched and no modifications have been done to it. He has talked to his long time Yamaha rep and has not resolved this problem.

Everything runs fine in the sequence from KS 'on', running up and down in speed, reverse etc. until you bring the cart to a stop. It does come back to a complete stop when letting off the gas and braking, but once stopped, the motor is still jerking back and forth a little.

He has replaced every switch and sensor, the solenoid and Moric controller. We suspected the pedal switch not releasing. Pedal angle adjusted to specs. But, with the cart on jackstands and the switch in his hand, he activated the switch, moved the accel pedal and the cart ran. He let off accel pedal, released the switch and hit the brake and it came to a stop, but the motor keeps jerking back and forth a little.

Will post picture of controller and sol later. Any ideas??

Cgtech – sure hoping you have some help with this problem.

Sounds like the solenoid is not de-energizing when he lets off the pedal. It should! Is it de-energizing when he turns the key off? If so, then something in the solenoid circuit is keeping it on when it should be off. You need to trace the circuit with a multimeter and find out where the problem is. I would have guessed controller but it sounds like that has already been replaced. A bad speed sensor might do it too since the solenoid energizes whenever the speed sensor sees any signal. That sounds like something that has not been looked at yet.

Well, Hi Mr Watt!! Thanks for the input. Yes, on KS 'off' the system resets and is good to go until letting off pedal and coming to a stop. Then same symptoms.

I am going to have him do this: KS off, switch to TOW. Then unplug the main connector. Then turn switch to RUN. Meter on Pack (-) and then test for pack voltage at connector on Pins 12,13, and slightly lower than pack voltage reading at Pin 3 feeding back thru the solenoid.

Then turn on KS. Should now have power at Pin 8. Now engage the Accel Sw with pedal and power should be on Pin 11 and go back off when released.

This cart was brand new when stretched, as are all of them that they stretch, and the wiring running forward from controller all had to be lengthened and spliced. I also heard that back in 2008 when the stretch was first completed that it was doing the same thing. The cart was put aside for a couple of weeks and then was working the next time used ?????? that one. It may have had issues all thru the years and whoever owned it never paid any attention to it.

What would be the effect, if when lengthening the wires to the front of the cart, wires on Pins 8 and 11 were swapped? It doesn't seem like it would work this way, but.... This is not an issue that any regular Yamaha tech would ever encounter in standard carts.

I bet you are right that they crossed something up when they lengthened the cables. If you end up having to buzz out the wiring, you may want to disconnect the battery pack when you do it. That is where I would be headed with this sort of problem. You could try disconnecting the speed sensor just as a quick check to see if that changes things. It won't run correctly at speed but the solenoid should still kick in and out.
You can also try to push the cart and see if the solenoid clicks in and out like it should. That is based on the controller seeing pulses from the speed sensor and trying to stop the cart if it's rolling.

Yep, crosstalk in the wire harness, or other bad juju sounds like a likely culprit to me. A whole new harness for a standard drive is like $150, considered making a new stretch harness. Never priced the factory stretch cart harness, but look here for the golf carts with the SVS & SVL designations (specialty vehicle short & specialty vehicle long). The stretch models first appear in the 2009 parts section. https://www.shopyamaha.com/parts-catalog/lines/golfcar

JD3-H2590-00-00 is the harness for a super long cart with 3 rows of seats in front of the rear axle, and can be found for $150. There is also one for more typical stretch carts with 2 rows of seats, it is JD4-H2590-00-00.

Heres a pic of the SVL, never even seen one of these monsters.

Thanks V-A and cgtech. These guys get 20 new carts at a time to stretch and have always made their own 'harness extensions' because when you are doing that many, it is a $$ saver over the purchased version. But, that doesn't mean their cannot be a mistake made when you stretch 100's a year. Actually, his son Justin who runs the shop now told Dad to ring all the wires out, because that is where the problem will be found. I am prety sure that he is correct on this one. Thank you guys for your input. Will post results.
