Default 85 EZGO 36V - Moves when put in gear

Howdy! I guess I'm diving into the world of golf carts...I had so much fun fixing up a 89 gas cart last year I couldn't pass up a deal on 2 carts on Facebook marketplace! This cart is a 1985 EZGO 36V that runs with a small issue...when you put it in forward or reverse, the cart starts to move on its own. I tested the microswitch for continuity and there is no continuity with the pedal up, but is continuity with it down. I'm confused because it seems to me with that break in the circuit, nothing should be happening. I see by searching the site some folks suggesting a stuck solenoid. I tested for continuity in the solenoid and got nothing.

Any help in where to go from here to troubleshoot would be appreciated! I'll post some pictures of this beauty when I get back in the garage. This is going to be a present for my mother in law if I ever get it working properly.

most common cause of this is indeed a stuck solenoid...check for voltage across the two large post when it is trying to move instead of continuity...should only show pack voltage on one large post until pedal is pressed, then click and get voltage to other side...

Finally got all of the batteries charged up to 100% on the automatic trickle charger. Put it in gear and got 37V on both sides of the solenoid without pushing the pedal. I've got a new one in the cart as well as brake shoes for the 3 carts I'm working on now. I'm tired of not being able to stop!

Yeeeah I'd agree being able to stop is just as important as being able to go lol

@camaroluvz28 - I installed a new 36V solenoid and got no movement in the cart. I have 37V on the hot side large post and nothing on either small post with the pedal at rest. When I hit the pedal, I got 37V on hot side large post and both small posts and 0V on the other large post. Do I have the small posts reversed?

Sounds like you have an issue with the ground to the solenoid...you should have positive on one small post and negative on the other...there is a wiring diagram in the stickies on the home page from electric EZ-Go...I would start by tracing your negative ground from battery to solenoid...

This was in fact the issue. The ground from the F&R switch went to they key switch and then to the solenoid. The key switch is rusted into the off position, so I just ran the negative straight to the solenoid. That got the forward selection to work! The reverse didn't work...guess it wasn't grounded. The old solenoid was stuck, so not sure how it ran in reverse...but I wired the reverse switch just like the forward one (positive coming from F&R switch then other side going to negative side of the solenoid. I have the batteries out of this cart for the moment as I'm using them to test another cart. I'll let you know if it worked when I get the other one to a stopping point. Thanks for your help!!
