Whichever way you go, go with the better brands of batteries (Crown, Trojan, etc). They may be 15-20% higher, but well worth it in the long run. Also, read up on the "Stickies" about batteries, save you money in long run.

I was debating which brand and saw that my local dealer sells 6V Crown batteries for $127 ea (with returning the cores).

Is this a fair price?
Also, while I'm replacing the batteries should I buy new cables?

Figured out the headlight/tail light situation! A couple of the leads on the actual headlight bulbs (behind the rubber boot) had become disconnected. Reconnected them, then red on white + Black on black and all good to go!
Only thing is they’re powered from two of the 6V batteries, which is fine for as little as I will likely use the headlights for now. But Once I get new batteries I will definitely be connecting to the entire battery pack and use a 36V to 12V converter.

excited to see how your build progresses. My wife and I just got a 1990 DS and I'm debating on what to do with the electrical stuff as well. What lift kit did you go with?

Haven’t purchased the lift kit yet but Im staying in the 3-4” lift range with 20” tires. It will either be an SCG 4” spindle lift or one of the Jake’s lift. Would gladly be open to opinions on either!

I’m with ya on the electronics- going back and forth on the solid state conversion but I will likely end up doing it at some point next year.

Still waiting for the batteries that I want to get back in stock.

Question for anyone with experience on the pre-solid state DS’s..
Is it normal for the area just behind the seat to get really hot to the touch, right above where the 5 (what look to be) solenoids are located?
