01 DS Gasser - Starter/Generator
I have a neighbor/friend that has an 01 DS that has been sitting dead in his barn for almost a year. He is somewhat mechanically inclined, more-so than me, but he let a friend swap out his starter/generator for a unit that apparently doesn't charge back the battery. So, he rode it for a while just charging the battery and ending up towing it home when it would no longer start. I don't know how he ended up with something that fit but wouldn't charge like the original did. Anyway, he wants to fix it right but doesn't want to put a lot of money into it. Regardless, he doesn't want to deal with the local dealer/shop here because they are just too expensive. I've been helping him look online (ebay) for a starter/generator that will work and will fit. But it's confusing. There are parts listed for club cars in the auction title but then the description says it's for an EZ-Go and then there are some that say they are for 84 thru 96 DS's and then there are some that say they are for 84 thru 2010 DS's. What can we look for to make sure we get the right part? Also, should he go ahead and replace the voltage regulator as well and, if so, how can we make sure we get the right thing? At this point, we aren't even sure where it's located.

Before 96 are Counter Clockwise rotation
After 96 are Clockwise rotation Before replacing stuff, I'd suggest checking the wiring first to make sure it's right, then run tests on the S/G and voltage regulator to see which one may be causing the no charge problem. |

Re: 01 DS Gasser - Starter/Generator
Thanks for the response. I suggested doing some checking and he stopped me and said he knows for a fact that the unit that is in his cart now does not have the ability to charge. Again, I don't know how something was made that fit but won't charge but he is sure that is the case.
So, we have seen several online that say they work clockwise or counter-clockwise. Is that why they are good for all DS models? Are they brand specific? Are would one that would fit a DS also fit a EZ-Go and vice versa? It's just hard to figure out what is going to work and what won't. |

Re: 01 DS Gasser - Starter/Generator
Stick with one that's specific to Club Car,
and Yes... there are import S/G's that will rotate both ways, but, they're a few bucks more. It's too bad the original S/G isn't still around... I'd like to see a pic of what he has in there now... is that possible? Oh and BTW... tell him that an 01 is still worth putting the $$ into, at least IMO! |

Re: 01 DS Gasser - Starter/Generator
Let me ask this way - if he buys one online that says it will work with 84 or newer DS Club Car, will it fit without modifications?
I'm sure we can take a pic of what is in there now when we get it out. He's definitely not considering replacing the cart. But he's on a limited budget so it's fix it cheap or can't afford to fix it at all. That's what I meant about not wanting to put the money into it. Looks like he can get one that says it will work for around $150. He paid $200 for what's in there now and I think it was rebuilt, which may be why it won't charge. If don't mind taking a look, would any of these work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-S...item3a650e7818 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAND...item3f0963c9c6 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MANDO...item588cb72567 |

Re: 01 DS Gasser - Starter/Generator
So, this one will work on a 01? This auction doesn't list any specific years, etc. - just part numbers, which we don't have anything to compare to since he already has something aftermarket that doesn't work. Just want to make sure before I advise him to buy this one.
