1978 Royal Ride Conversion Part: 1
I recently purchased a 1978 Elmco Royal Ride. It was all original and ran fairly well, however I wanted to upgrade its drive system from 36 volt solenoid system to the newer 48 volt PWM system. Elmco used Club Car chassis's and in my case a 1978 Club Car Caroche.
After speaking with some Club Car tech's familiar with the old Caroche's, I decided to buy a 2008 Club Car DS and swap the bodies. The following photos illustrate the steps necessary to do the exchange. Step 1: Disassemble and remove current bodies. Pretty self explanatory and really nothing special here. |

Step 2: Modify DS frame to accept Royal ride body. The front frame needed 1" spacer added but no welding. The rear frame needed a new metal welded to get the new mounting hole locations. Finally the aluminum trim around the storage boxes need to be removed for the front body panel to fit.

Step 3: Cut the front and rear body panels to fit on the new DS frame. The involved cutting the " tabs" from the bottom of the panels and modifying the piece that holds the radio to fit around the passenger storage box.

Step 4: I relocated the forward reverse switch to the front panel and reinstalled the turn signal switch with new heat shrink.
Currently the body panels are at the fiber glass shop where a new back seat is being custom made where the old cooler was. Updates to follow. |

Compared to the Royal Ride retrofit it was much easier to put the 2008 DS body to the 1978 Caroche frame.
