Default Questions on a 1999 DS 48v

I’m new to the forum and golf carts, I just bought a 1999 48v DS, I’m a golfer and won’t be doing much else with it, I have found that it goes about 12 mph on flat surface and about 8 mph is a slope, is that about normal? And I’ve been reading and can’t find much about the older DS models, is there anything you can do for more speed/power on a 99 with out upgraded motor/controller, thanks

Batteries are really not going change the speed but would affect run time. There not much you can do other then the motor on the series carts. The easiest thing would be to find a 36 volt motor and swap yours out. Or send yours out to like plum quick for a bandit upgrade.

Is 12 a typical speed on a 48v? I’d have thought faster than that.

I just went through this process with a 1999 DS 48V. Yes, 12 is typical for stock cart. I went from 12->18 with just a motor upgrade(D&D torque motor). If you chose a speed motor, you could get a bit more out of it I am sure, but for my use case, i wanted torque. That upgrade was about $500. If you want to go further(I wanted more torque), You can do battery cable upgrade, controller upgrade, solenoid upgrade, and Forward and Reverse Switch upgrade. Just note that after you go past the motor, you are getting into a good chunk more effort, and you kinda have to. Doing just one of those after motor, doesnt give you very much, you need to do them all. Its fun, but you will really need to plan and learn the electrial system of the cart. There really isnt an exact "do this" guide for those upgrades. All the information is in this forum, but you will have to do lot of research. Some of us find that fun, but if you dont, caution.
