Preparing for the upgrade
Well, I already have the 16 hp Vanguard installed in my G1. But....like most of you I'm craving more power. It runs super nice. Pulls hard. Starts easy. Decently quiet. I love it. But, it just needs some more ponies.
So I have some questions for those of you who have Vtwins. 1.) Should I build my spare, aluminum rocker, 16 hp Vanguard? 2.) If so, what should I do to it without sacrificing reliability, smoothness, and easy starting? 3.) If not, should I hold out for a 23 hp Vanguard and keep it almost stock? 4.) Or....should I go with a Kohler 25? (I've heard they are the kings of torque) Your input is appreciated, especially if you have experience with any of the above. Help me make this engine the last one/ best one for my cart. |

Re: Preparing for the upgrade
Andy, I would build the 16 from the bottom up. Do the rev kit. When Rich built my motor he didn't buy mine as a kit. Instead he bought the billet retainers, billet pushrods, timing key and also double wrapped springs. Revs out nicely even with the single barrel carb. I would also install the 23hp cam. I think it has .050 more lift than the stock 16 cam. Do the 2 barrel set up on it. Port and polish the heads. I think you will be happy with the outcome.
My 16 runs great with just the rev kit. It's more than what I need at camp. I could just imagine what it would do with more goodies. I bet this motor hasn't seen 4000 rpm yet. |

Re: Preparing for the upgrade
Gary, you probably are right, the engine I have works well, and I like the torque and power level for a stock engine. I really want to get this right, don't want a monster. Looking for smooth and reliable power, but impressive/noticable gains.
I think you're right about the billet parts. Rich did tell me about those. Where do I find them? Any ideas? |
