Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
My G1 has has a problem when starting off,the engine needs a lot of revs before it engages the secondary sheave,IT THEN JUMPS FORWARD AND CAUSES A BIT OF WHEELSPIN, new belt fitted but no change to the problem, new mounts fitted and engine tensioner.can anyone offer advice on what may be the problem? as I live in the UK parts are only available from the USA and shipping and import and taxes at the border double the price. So I need advice on this to avoid buying nparts that are not required,Can anyone help please.
Many thanks, rockinr382 Last edited by rockinr382; 11-21-2011 at 09:00 AM.. Reason: missed part of problem description |

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
If your driven clutch (rear clutch) is not engaging properly I would suggest removing it and cleaning thoroughly and lubing the sliding sheave where it contacts the shaft. Sounds to me like its hanging up on the shaft and not sliding easily. You should be able to push the sliding sheave with your hands and it should move freely. With the engine off of course !

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
If you don't already have one, I'd order a service manual from one of our sponsors. Well worth the price since the G1 is a classic.

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
Have a look at the plastic shoes on the clutch ramp, they can break into a point like shape and wear into the ramps. If the wear is not severe it can be touched up by filing smooth. Replace all the shoes if you find some are broken, it is easiest to do this by taking the clutch out of the cart. Use a punch to knock them out from the small hole on the back side of the ramp or if they are stubborn just use a drill. The drill will cut through the soft plastic before the metal but use a bit of caution.

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
No, I don't have any parts for sale. Was only suggesting where your problem might be and how to repair it.

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
Jack the cart up and watch the clutches.
It sounds as if the primary may be sticking and engaging hard. Lets chase the real problem. |

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
I agree with DOOm's. What year G1 do you have? Is your primary (engine) clutch silver, with a bolt head showing or a gold color cap with 6 screws holding it on?

You might be right, we aren't sure if he's watched the clutches in action yet. Good call! That's why I come here, to learn from the best.

Re: Yamaha G1 secondary sheaves
Many thanks for the latest advice, secondary sheave lubricated and nice and easy sliding, will now concentrate on the primary clutch. The advice from this forum is second to none, Much appreciated, will report back when clutch is worked on, and will follow your guidance to jack the car up and watch the clutches.
Best Regards, rockinr382 |
