Default melted start/gen wire

ok so I have one cart that is really been a pain in my butt it started when the wire from the selonoid to the start/gen wore through and touched the start gen well I replaced the solenoid and wire well it happened again three days later so I replaced both again and cut an old air hose down and wraped the wire with this then wrapped both really good with black tape well yesterday I discovered that the wire and rubber hose that I put on it are melted beyond repair my question is what would cause a start/gen to get that hot to melt the wire that badly I have been rebuilding start/gens instead of replacing them I have yet to take that one off to look was just wanting some insight on what to look for before I do

It may sound strange but clean and tighten all grounds. Sounds like the starter is not grounded proper and is drawing high currant to crank.
