Default 1983 ezgo 2 cycle wiring caught fire in reverse

I just purchase this recently (my first cart). It didn't run and had very suspect splices and broken wires. I replaced the broken ones following '***********' wiring diagram. Everything was fine going forward; however, the wires replaced caught on fire in REVERSE. Note: I used 18 gauge wire that I purchased on amazon on all these wires.

The wires that caught on fire:

Soleniod 's'---F&R 'C'
Soleniod 's'---F&R microswitch
F&R microswitch---Ignition switch
Soleniod 'm'---ignition switch
Soleniod 'i'---limit switch
limit switch---ignition switch

Does anyone know what wire to use? Why this would happen?

What diagram are you using? Those designations don't look right. Do you have the big battery cables connected to the big lugs? Post some pictures.

18 gauge is kind of small. Especially if another big ground is missing.

So I replaced the voltage regulator because it looked very corroded on the backside. Replaced all the burn wires and away she went. Very good strong cart, but also pretty loud.
