Default downshift problem 85 ezgo gas

Before I reassemble my cart, Ii should check out the shifting problem. The cart goes and shifts up to high, but about 25 percent of the time when you slow or stop it will not shift back down and stays in high so you can't start off again. If I shift in reverse and back up a bit it will shift down and go again. Is it the driven clutch or something else that needs attention. any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

Yes, you definitely have a clutch that is not disengaging. When the symtoms occurs next time, lift the seat and watch the clutch movement before you put it in rev. to see which clutch is hung up. The driven clutch has some serviceable parts but the drive clutch doesn't that i'm aware of.. Good Luck!!

Is your drive clutch noisy? The original clutches get awfully noisy when the bushings and rollers get worn,When they get to that point they will hang-up and not back-shift untill you stop and/or reverse.Grab the housing of the drive clutch and rock it clock-wise/counter-clockwise and see how much play it has, also try rocking it up and down to check shaft-play.The original clutches are pretty much a throw-away unless you know someone who knows how to get the pins out of the spider and can get parts. You are much farther ahead to upgrade it.The Driven clutch(axle-mounted) could be hanging up,grab the sheaves and see if they rotate individually and if the outer sheave will slide towards the engine.Hope this helps.
