DS 1988 Model

A friend gave me the cart .
It had been sitting out in the weather(still in pretty good shape).
The charger had been weathered(had to have new printed card installed).

Before he quit using the cart it started running slower and would only
make about 9 holes. It also would not go up hills very well.

I figured it was time for new batteries bought (6) brand new.
I cleaned the contacts on the Wiper switch assembly.

It seems to do well on flat ground but slows down badly going up small inclines.

Can anyone shed some light on my problem?

First of all electric and gas carts slow down when climbing hills this is normal. Stock carts are made to only go 8-14 MPH on mostly flat golf courses with a max of 2 people and 2 golf bags. Power from new batterys will be low until break in period is over 20-100 discharge-charge cylces. Power will depend on quality of batterys purchased and in the case of 6 volt batterys that you purchased ( GOLF CART BATTERYs ) NOT AUTO OR MARINE BATTERYS.
A C C built in 1988 used a set of large coil resistors ( unless its been converted ) to control speed and the power is waisted generating heat rather than performance?

welcome to BGW, yes old mec covered it........you will gain some power as batteries break in as long as you break them in right.........also make sure cables are in good condition and tight but in the end its a resistor cart and the nature of an elec. cart is its going to slow down going up hill or up inclines................

Do I need to run them down pretty low?
Not sure about break in.

no try and not run them past 50% golfcart batteries don,t like that............................

most manufacturers recommend using up only 10 to 20% of the capacity during the first 20 or so charge/discharge cycles. deep discharging is never good for lead acid.
