Question Yamaha G16 Starter and wiring issue

Hello-
I have a 1999 Yamaha G16 with a wiring issue. I could use some help. The first problem was that is was not charging. I replaced the starter and when I was plugging the new starter into the wiring the green and red wires into the wiring harness they started to melt!!! So I began to start with a wiring diagram. I went thru and noticed that the throttle swith by the gas pedal was melted as well. So here is where I'm at. I have replaced the wiring harness, throttle switch, voltage regulator and new starter. When I plug in the red and green wires from the starter to the harness it wont allow the starter to run. When I disconnect them(red&green wire) or the voltage reg it will run with full power(The starter). I don't know what will cause this! I'm $450 dollars in this project and still I'm in the same situation I was a week ago when it was not charging! I've asked some techs from other companys and they said they never seen this and to give yamaha a call. I don't know where to go from here. The harness is new and the throttle switch, voltage reg and starter are from a cart I use all the time and I'm still haveing problems I have checked all grounds.. One last thing, I will run the starter with the belt off the motor and it will run wide open when I plug it into the harness it wants to die out like it has a load on it. I thank you in advance for your help!!!!!!!!

Default Re: Yamaha G16 Starter and wiring issue

Wow, don't know where to start but here goes. 1) ALWAYS disconnect the neg battery terminal when your messing around with the wiring. 2) Sounds as if you may have grounded out the system when you switched out the starters. 3) Sounds like you may have the VR wired wrong. I'll look at one of my G16's tomorrow and think about it some more and get back to you. In the meantime ck out the stickeys about starter wiring and my yammy won't turn over.
